Week 7 make-up: Independent Field Research, Long Life Design.

1)

Practice or actions that support things to last:

  • use paper to cover the book cover

  • apply oil to the sewing machine

  • apply wax to the floor

Actions people do that make things quickly become unusable or thrown away:

  • break the glass accidentally

  • get some unwashable dirt on the clothes

  • accidentally cut something

2)

I do consider of the quality of stitching and material of the clothes when shopping. My mom always tell me to buy clothes which have thicker fabrics then they will last long. She also told me to buy less white clothes because they are much more easily to become dirty that we cannot completely clean them.

3)

I applied the phone case and the laptop case for my iPhone and MacBook. I also applied a keyboard cover. I decided to choose a kind of thick and rubber phone case because this kind of phone case won’t be broken easily and will perfectly protect my phone. I used to find out that my dad’s keyboard was really dirty and the color faded away after being used for a long time, so I really prefer to use the keyboard cover to protect it. My last laptop didn’t last a long time because I didn’t place a cover on it. It became unable to be used after it accidentally fell to the ground, so this time I went to bought the laptop case right after I bought this new one.

The example that I don’t practice Long Life Design is that I just sticked this paper cover to my last laptop. It looked great but it was really not functional. It cannot protect any part of my laptop, so my laptop became really damaged in and out.

The things I usually throw away after a whole day are packing bags and water bottles. I may throw some paper boxes nest week after receiving my packages from Amazon. I really don’t have ideas about what will I throw away at the end of the semester, maybe some works I made for my courses. I will keep my pencils and brushes and other drawing and paintings tools beyond my time through Parsons. I treasure my tools and I don’t want to replace them.

I found out that the things I most easily throw away are food packing bags and plastic bottles. I throw them everyday. Most of them are plastic, so it is hard to reuse them. I do have an idea about the container of sushi. I found out that these kinds of containers are very pretty and have various patterns. I think it will be a good idea to turn these used containers into artworks or decorating items that can be sold in a store.

4)

Sure the problem of climate change effects the food industry a lot and not just in America. Too much heat will cause the pests to grow faster and are more likely to damage foods. Some of the vegetables need a specific temperature to grow, which is hard to reach right now. In the future, we might have less kinds of food to choose, or we might not choose whatever we want to eat at anytime. I would like to visit this restaurant because it is really unique. However, I am really concerned whether this restaurant will last a long time. Because when I searched it on Yelp, only three person gave their evaluation, which means few people have been to it. I was worried about how this restaurant can make money to maintain. When I went to its website, I found out that I have to book a seat in order to have dinner in it, so I guess it is more like a private or special place?? I am so not sure.

5)

I think it will last a long time (10 years or maybe longer) if Mr.Eng tried to fit the younger customers and non-Chinese customers. The culture behind this Tofu shop is really abundant, so I think he can success with inventing new items using old methods. Tofu this kind of ingredient is a very Chinese (or Asian) thing, which contained the whole Asian culture. I am sure the history and culture behind it will attract more and more non-Asian people to try it. Besides selling tofu, Mr. Eng also sells soy milk, rice pudding and grass jelly in this store which seem really attractive to me. I think he can think of more snakes made of tofu to sell to catch the attention form the new generation. Combining old culture and new approaches can be hard because I think although it is easy to make different foods with tofu and soy for Asians, but since Mr.Eng experienced a different environment, he may not easily think of a recipe. He can ask more Chinese or Asian people to gain the method of making tofu, rice, and soy into delicious food.

Extra Credits

1) Fong On Tofu

They sell soy milk and grass jelly.

The whole shop.

They also sell Tofu with a lot of different ingredients.

I bought a bottle of soy milk and grass jelly. They cost me 7 dollars.

Although it’s a lovely shop, I don’t think it will last ten years. The main reason is that the shop has very few customers, so it doesn’t make much money. It’s hard to keep the store going if it’s not profitable.

2) Kombucha Leather

I made my bracelet with thread and Kombucha leather.

I used one wet and one dry Kombucha leather to make my two rings.
