Figure Ground Relationships

This text based collage provided the necessary shapes to construct three different black and white compositions.

1. The first composition is of black figures on a white background. The shapes from the newspaper collage were isolated and then duplicated and scaled to create the first hand, and this hand was then duplicated and flipped horizontally.

2. The second composition is ambiguous in value. Shapes can be seen within both white and black areas of the canvas. This composition was created by taking every shape from the hands and laying them out across the page. Because the shapes were so small and provided too much negative space, turning the piece into a black on white composition, the shapes were all uniformly scaled to create an equal black vs white ratio across the canvas.

3. The third composition is a white figure on a black background. The shapes from the first two compositions were then used as outlining material for a human head created in negative space. The shapes were once again all scaled uniformly to make a fuller and more interesting thumbnail.
