IS 2 – Bridge Project #1

Laurie’s project was for her Time class, and it was all about sound and soundscapes. She started off with an assignment of needing to choose images of any nature that she found inspiring. Then she had to create a soundscape that went along with those images.

In the diagram, Laurie’s process is shown through 3 main steps that lead to her final project on the right. The starting point is a speaker because the assignment is about sound. Then the diagram shows make up and the “Youtube” logo because one of her classmates made their project about make up, similar to a make up tutorial from Youtube, and Laurie found that inspiring. There is also a drawing of some polaroid images that I drew to represent the images that Laurie needed to choose. Underneath the images is a very small depiction of the universe with a planet, the moon, and some stars that I used to show the incredible vastness of choices that Laurie had to choose from for her images.

In the next step, I show the make-up of melanin because Laurie felt drawn to skin color and the idea of her own roots. Along with the melanin, Laurie used Solange Knowles and her style – including hair and clothing – as inspiration. Laurie mentioned that Solange’s vibrancy is relatable and she feels represents herself as a woman and person as well. In the middle is a drawing of an article that Laurie had to read by R. F. Schafer about sound and soundscapes. She said she found it difficult to read on her own, but when she went over it in class and understood it, she found it extremely interesting, particularly how it explained the classification of sounds.

The final step in Laurie’s process for this project was to use Garageband to create her own soundscape for her selected and created images. This is why I used the Garageband logo. Underneath the logo, however, I included a drawing of a can that says “music in a can” with the universal “No” symbol over it. This represents Laurie’s desire to use mostly original beats and sounds as opposed to pre-made beats (like music in a can).

After all of this work, Laurie created a beautiful project with different images that represented her and her style, along with a unique soundscape. This final product is shown with the sheet of pictures that I chose to color each individual one a different color of the rainbow with a heart in the center. The heart in the center shows how beautiful the final product was, along with representing how Laurie put all of her heart into this project and made it her own. And of course, the music notes surrounding the final product represents the soundscape she created.

Represents sound and how the project is all about it.

Represents how Laurie had to create her own sound for the project.

Represents how Laurie saw her classmates’ work and used them as inspiration, keeping an open mind.

Represents the one particular project by Laurie’s classmate about makeup that Laurie really like and felt inspired by.

Represents a melanin molecule, which Laurie used as part of her inspiration.

These are actual works of art that Laurie created with notes on what kind of sound the images evoked in Laurie’s mind.

These are some of the final images that Laurie used in her slideshow.

I absolutely love cats (I have special permission to bring my cat here to school)! I believe we should save Earth because it's the only planet with chocolate, and nice animals. I love the city.
