Climate Change and Cities Response

I included this photo from the New York City government website because it reminded me of a flood map in the reading. It brings into perspective the impacts on the city we live in and makes the effects of climate change more real, as if they weren’t clear enough

Climate change impacts the world in countless ways such as; heat waves, increasing heavy rainfalls, and increasing droughts. This is information I already knew. However, there was a lot of information in this reading that I found very interesting. There was a lot of information on disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. To understand the difference, I found it helpful to understand that disaster risk reduction typically starts after a major event whereas climate change adaptation is based on scientific research. However, they both are aimed at mitigating hazards and adapting to lessen vulnerability to these hazards. I also found it interesting how the reading suggested cities should institute regular impact assessments. It happens so often that there is a natural disaster in a high risk area. If these risks could be regularly addressed ahead of time, damages would decrease dramatically. I also realized a common misconception is that high risk areas are only areas that are less wealthy. However, the reading showed that even mega cities like New York can be at risk to the impacts of climate change. The city is susceptible to cyclones, rising temperatures, inland flooding and droughts. Overall I found this reading very interesting and liked how I could relate it back to this city
