When I heard the prompt, “A time when your understanding of something changed,” I thought about some of the biggest changes in my life and how they’ve shaped what I understand. When I thought about coming to Parsons, I realized my understanding of myself changed. Before coming to Parsons I was anxious and depressed. I did not feel ready for the change I was about to endure and had a hard time thinking positively. However, I realize looking back that the change was exactly what I needed to push me outside of my comfort zone and be able to grow. Through this change I came to understand that I am stronger than I thought and can overcome my anxiety and live a more positive life. I am engaging the principle of focal point because the road leads you to the center of the page where you can see the light at the end of the tunnel of buildings. I use more high key to middle range values in my piece but also some lower key values. The road and sky are lighter and thus high key while the buildings are darker and closer to middle range and lower key. I love the look of watercolor and even though I am not the greatest at it I wanted to push myself to try my best. One of the more challenging parts of this project was that I had to make my embroidery bigger or else it wouldn’t come out well. I thought this was going to make the person too big in contrast to the buildings but I was able to adjust the buildings to fit the person. The most exciting part of this process was the digital embroidering because I didn’t really understand how it worked before. It was really fascinating to watch illustrator files come to life in a new way and I got a really good understanding of how the machine works so I can potentially think of ways to use it in the future. I really liked reflecting on this question because I had been thinking about this change a lot and it was really helpful to see how I can potentially bring my thoughts to life.
