This unit was overall quite difficult for me because I haven’t spent much time drawing or painting the figure. I was not very confident in my drawing or especially painting skills and was quite nervous. When we started, I could understand the proportions but it is hard to remember them all when creating the figure, especially in different poses. I enjoyed learning how to draw hands because it was something I couldn’t quite get before. However, I found it harder to draw them when I was creating the two page spread about the hidden city. That assignment was quite difficult for me because I wanted to capture people in these spaces but often times they were moving or walking by so I had to either take a photo or try my best to remember. My favourite assignment from this unit was the risograph prints because I learned how to use the risograph machine and create three pieces that I was very proud of. I spent 2 hours at the risograph printer because I was having trouble aligning the orange but in the end I’m really happy with how it turned out. Even though the orange is still slightly unaligned, I think it shows the viewer how the separate colours were printed separately and makes the prints look more special. I can see by looking back at my first figure painting session until my last that I improved greatly over the few sessions we had. It took me a while but I started being able to make longer brush strokes and paint figures that looked more similar to the model. For example, looking at my paintings from November 9th, you can see the short brush strokes and it looks disjointed and messy. However, when you look at my painting from from November 26, you can see longer strokes. The blue down the woman’s back is all one stroke. This also shows greatly in my gesture paintings from each session. I am surprised to see the difference from the gesture paintings from our first session to our last. Once again, the paintings from the first session are disjointed which I think is partially because I needed to use more water and partially because it took me longer to get to the place I did. I am very proud of my progress and think my painting and figure skills have both improved greatly through this unit.
