 Irish Culture

Ireland is a european country and island off the west shore of the United Kingdom. The country is the second largest island of the British Isles and the third largest in Europe. The capital of Ireland is Dublin, on the east coast. Ireland’s culture has been primarily Gaelic throughout its history, though it has also been influenced by English and Scottish culture. Due to the extent of Irish emigration, Irish festivals such as St Patrick’s Day and Halloween have been adopted by people all around the world. St Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland in remembrance of Saint Patrick, who legend states banished snakes from the island and taught the Irish about the concept of Trinity by showing people the shamrock. The three-leaved clover was used to represent the Christian belief of “three divine persons in the one God”. This belief prompted phrases used in many Catholic prayers referencing these three people within one as the father, son and holy spirit. Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in Ireland which comes most commonly in the forms of Catholicism and then Protestantism. The Christian religion is thought to have been brought to Ireland around the 5th century. The triquetra, which inspired my design, is also known as a Trinity knot. The design is similar to the shamrock in which the three leaves of the knot represent the three divine persons in one god within the concept of Trinity. I chose to bring the Celtic Knot inspired design to life in a modern living and dining room. I wanted to bring the older culture to new life in a modern home.
