Bridge 4: Imagining a New Agenda

Experiential Objective

My design will aim to help the visitors of the High Line to experience and appreciate the people and environment around them. These days it is easy to get distracted by our phones and technology. I want the High Line to be somewhere people can go to relax and take a break from the fast-paced city.

Mood Board

Mood Visualization Drawing

Above is the High Line currently. There is just a large open space with no where for people to relax and enjoy the view.

User A and User B’s experiences as well as planning for the experience and design.

Site map drawings with the addition of a newly designed bench. The bench would be two sided to offer more seating. The High Line gets so busy on a nice day and it is difficult to find a place to sit. These site maps include drawings of how people might experience and engage with the space.

These are representations of what the bench would look like in the space and how people could interact with it. The low points are a space for people to engage with each other more fluidly than a normal bench. However, people can really use the proposed bench in any way they would like. The seats are slightly tilted upwards to encourage people to stop looking down at technology and look up at the world around them.

4D Experience

The experience I wanted to create through my design was the act of looking up at the world around you. It is so easy to look down and get sucked into the online world. I wanted to make it easier to look up at the world. With my bench in place on the High Line people would be able to experience and enjoy the view of the Hudson River and the nature around them. To illustrate this I went to Washington Square Park and experienced sitting straight up and down versus tilted back. It was much easier to look down at my phone while I was sitting up straight and since that is most people’s tendency I want to decrease that ease.
