Sustainable Systems: Coastal Cleanup Crew

For my YI/YI project, I wanted to create an organization/program that helped bring awareness to plastic waste in oceans. This issue not only affects our water, but the marine animals, and us as well. We generate a lot of this waste, so we should be more cautious on how we dispose of it. If we pollute our land, it will only bring harm to ourselves. Ocean pollution affects humans because these chemicals can contaminate our water supplies. A lot of people (especially in New York) might think this doesn’t apply to them but there actually are polluted bodies of water near us. I wanted to create an organization/program primarily focused in New York to raise awareness about plastic waste in the ocean. Coastal Cleanup Crew is known for bringing together a community that works together to collect trash littered along the coastline. We work hard to lead and inspire action in support of our beautiful oceans. We identify sites for cleanup, recruit and provide guidance to beach captains and volunteers across New York State. Anyone can participate. We welcome local schools, churches, environmental organizations, Boy Scout/Girl Scout groups, and individuals. Coastal Cleanup Crew’s main cleanup sites as of now are Hudson River Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park. We plan to branch out within the next few years.
