Observing Spaces

1. Outside the subway/PATH station on 14th St.

  • Time: 3:13PM
  • Weather was sunny, it was hot.
  • The space is near a food truck, which at this time seemed less active than it usually is.
  • People seemed like daily commuters who were waiting to cross the road. Some people were talking to each other, they seemed like they knew each other.
  • The only time there were many people around was when a train would arrive. Everyone would be rushing to their work/study places.
  • The place is on a sidewalk, at a pedestrian crossing, outside a PATH exit, opposite to the entrance.

 

2. At the subway/PATH station on 14th St.

  • Time: 3:30PM
  • The subway station gets extremely hot as it is underground.
  • People only interact if they know each other, most are on their phones.
  • People tend to look often at the screen displaying train ETA.
  • There is only little seating space.
  • It is not as busy as other subway stations.
  • People also carry their electric scooters.
  • People usually gather near the boarding area 2 minutes before the arrival of the train

 

3. In the PATH train from 14th St. to Newport, NJ.

  • Time: 3:42PM
  • The train is busy only at certain times during the day. It was not as busy at this time.
  • People are in a closed and quiet environment.
  • There are no prominent interactions between people, except to make space for each other or give each other way while entering or exiting the train.
  • People are either on their devices or resting, most appear tired after their respective work days.
  • Most appear to be regular commuters.
