[Space & Materiality] Final Project : Social and Ecological Space and Materiality

[Introduction]

In this last project we dealt with the human body and it’s proportions, based on the pattern of the Vitruvian Man of Leonardo Da’Vinci as the geometric pattern or point of departure.

Nine inch figure was created with aluminum wire armatures and plastics that represent the general natural proportions of an adult body to a scale of 1-1/2″ = 1′-0″

Relate to the body, it’s scale and proportion, students were asked to design and  create a furniture for the figure  that provide comfort and need.

<Reflection>

‘Nature is the most human-friendly, human-comforting, and environmental friendly source of design’

I always thought that nature is the best inspiration for art in which incomparable beauty exists. Every time I see nature, it provides me different views, feelings and inspirations. Throughout the course, aside from nature being the best inspiration for me, I learned that it is actually composed of elements that are balanced, proportional and systematic. More importantly, this project on designing furniture for human figure allowed me to realized that  this balances are very human-friendly, who are also from nature. When people including me think of geometric figures, we often think that it is only hard, complicated, and complex. However, in fact, it was all from the nature we are living it. Practicing the  geometric figure based design allowed me to think of design that are both nature and human friendly.  As a designer who wish to create garment that comforts both human minds and body, I believe that this will further help me in pursuing my major as a fashion designer.
