Orientation: Reflection

As a Jewish family, her family has some experience of being a victim to racial segregation, which helps them stand up to its injustice. Paley also presents a viewpoint that is often unacknowledged. It was interesting to read first hand experiences about a caucasian woman resisting racial segregation, and how she fought back against her own social group to stand up against an injustice she clearly thought was necessary to solve. Another interesting note is how Paley’s actions were influenced by her mother’s. Having seen her mother resist the injustice of racial segregation on the bus, Paley was also able to do the same once she was older and on her own bus trip. This shows how Caucasian privilege prevails through generations and is still prevalent in today’s society.
