FIT Exhibition Response

The image below is of a mannequin wearing a look that was designed by André Courrèges in France during the 1960’s. The look was featured in the “Expedition: Fashion from the Extreme” exhibition in 2017. Andre’s look is a mixture of youth and space age. The light grey tones, the a-line silhouette, and the childlike details like the top-stiched pockets show the 60’s craze of clothes that challenged ideas of youth. By using childlike details and silhouettes on a woman’s body, André brings out a playful contrast, and creates this image of an innocent and youthful woman. André’s clothes show a glimpse of the 60’s fashion which was full of futuristic and youth inspired clothes. As we know, fashion picks up on history, 60’s fashion was also similarly influenced by what was happening in that time. Teenage culture and streetstyles influenced fashion in the 60’s, which was contrary to the past where industry and designers set the trends. And in this time, streetstyles and cultures influencing designers has increased greatly. It even happens as we dress daily. We pick up on details that we see outside of our homes. We think they are cool and try to incorporate them in our wardrobe. There is also, however, a personal and different way we try to incorporate these details in our clothes; there is our thinking and creativity that we might add.
