Carrie Mae Weems

The artist, Carrie Mae Weems is a black woman who is most famous for The Kitchen Table series. In this series, she photographs herself and other black people in her kitchen, often exuding a strong sense of vulnerability and a deeper insight to her life as woman of colour in the 1990’s. Furthermore, she expresses her anger in this interview at the lack of representation that black people get from white artists, and how there is a sense of unrequited love that she feels with their work. I really appreciated how she chose to address this problem through her series by taking charge and tirelessly creating work that showed a true representation of her life and her story, which is also reflective of the stories of her fellow black people. By doing this, I feel like she crushes the stereotypes that people perpetuate and ultimately she is able to tell her truth amidst a culture that tends to ignore the struggles and stories of people of colour.
