Einstein’s Dreams

Einstein’s Dreams

For this project, I was really inspired by the book we read, Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman. In this book, each chapter reflects a different iteration of the concept of time, in a way that seemed very whimsical. As such, I wanted to illustrate each chapter of the book in a way that reflected its poetic nature in the form of tarot cards, as I believe that the content of the book lent itself very well to its magical associations. I drew inspiration from my research of the different designs of tarot cards, combining them together with my own style such that my art reflected both my inspiration and myself.

Using black and white ink, I created a set of cards that I believe showcase the nature of the book without the actual use of its written text. While some illustrations may be vaguer than others, I believe that this will only add to the overall intrigue of the project, even for people that may not have read the book and therefore do not have previous context of the project. Ultimately, I hope that the project invokes an almost whimsical fairytale-like feeling within the viewer as they look through the cards that each illustrate a different concept of time.
