Studio – Fabric Manipulation Research

I researched embroidery techniques and after watching this video I decided to try and make “split stitch” embroidery. I looked for a technique that wouldn’t be too romantic and wanted the embroidery to look like a line you draw so it had to be relatively thin. The split stitch was perfect for it since looks very clean, sophisticated but not too stacked.

Dior by John Galliano

In this garment, Galliano created a victorian inspired blouse with ruffles made out of silk chiffon. The look captures Galliano’s Dior, a mixture of high and low. The manipulated fabric references Christian Dior “femme fleur”. The fabric manipulation on the blouse is the key to its success, it creates drama and flow. In addition, it has a role in embodying the classic feminine figure since the volume of the ruffles highlights the hourglass body. By that Galliano creates the contrast between the S&M style trousers with aggressive associations and the “Mary Antoinette” effect of the blouse.
