Fabric Manipulations – Studio

For my fabric manipulations, I took an inspiration from the folding fan I made. Each of the fragments in it functioned as a visual source for each of the fabric manipulations.

The squares I made, inspired by the beauty elements inside the fan.

For this pattern, I embroidered Rossy de Palma’s portrait on the cloth and afterward, used tea to dye it. Dying the cloth made the embroidery more hinted and gave the cloth an interesting, rough texture. The texture exggerates her already obscured face and give the square more vibrancy.

The strongest understanding I had from making the project and from reading the articles in Seminar is that there is no key to creating beauty. It is completely subjective. There is a universal beauty but when it comes to anything besides nature, it is all about the artist. As an aspiring artist, I understood the importance of developing my own concept of beauty so I could make visual choices about my creation and to go with them. Although this doesn’t promise it to work out, it helps in providing a certain confidence which is important for artistic development.

Also, making bridge 1 about the fan which I made was very intriguing since I had to look at it as an object and not as my creation. Trying to apply Prown’s methodology on it, helped me understand how every detail in design has an impact on how the viewer perceives it.
