Color Palette and Textile Board – STUDIO

The concept of my collection would be the male homosexual gaze on women. I was influenced by many gay artists and their perception of women. After diving into the subject, I got the feeling that the way they portray women can be interpreted as tired and cliche. I decided that as a gay man it would be most natural to approach the subject from my own perspective on women. I realized I can’t really speak for other voices but my own. Eventually, those inspirations from other artists will sync into my work since they are part of who I am. I would like to use the textile collection as a tribute to women that influences me and to make each texture based on a different personality characteristic. In addition, I would like to use stains as a motive for my collection as part of my interest in imperfection that creates beauty. My seminar research is going to focus on gay fashion designers and the way their homosexuality influenced their gaze on women. I feel like the research helps me deal with my on view on women especially after I decided to focus my research on my two favorite designers, McQueen and YSL as my subjects. I think those two designers which have two different stances on designing for women. As someone who is very influenced by them, I am intrigued to discover how my perspective on women and designing for women will be close to theirs. Whether I’ll find similarities or differences, it would help me understand my own view better.
