The Dreamers

The Dreamers directed by Bernardo Bertolucci centers around the themes of sex, film, love, and revolution. The choice to set this movie in the 60s was perfect for these ideas, as well as the location, France. I admit I was caught off guard and a bit off put by the explicit scenes, but overall the message the movie sent through the relationship between Mathew and Isabella, Isabella and Theo, and the three of them combined was definitely shown through their sexual experiences. Isabella and Theo lived in the film, they were living a fantasy that in the end Mathew couldn’t join them in. I think he tried to ground them because he did love them even if only for a few weeks, by telling them that their relationship was an unhealthy dependency on each other. Their relationship made them stronger and bolder, but it was also a weakness that made them reckless and dependent on one another. They even had to share a romantic partner. I do believe Theo and Matt where more than friends.
