Description

For this video, I used Rebecca Solnit’s A field guide to getting Lost as my text inspiration. I filmed my friends and I as we explored a different part of New York, one we had never been too. Combining that with visual and audio effects I made my own how to video, on getting lost.

Process

Figuring out what style to use for this video and how to work with it was probably the most difficult. That and finding time to film during finals week when I was out one weekend. I tried to do something candid similar to my last video. Also, because I wanted our location and activities in that location to go unplanned, trying to come up with possible shot and ideas for the video was also a challenge. I knew I wanted to practice with the green screen and I am happy with what I was able to do with that. The voice over I feel was rushed so in the video I tried to solve this, but I definitely could have written more. Overall I feel like the process really came out while I was filming and editing. I did try to correlate some of the video and the text without actually reading or copying the text, so the color blue is something I tried to use in the video while I played with visual effects. I also wanted the viewer to feel like they were losing something in the video, even if it was just one of their senses. So I cut to black and cut the audio at different times and tried to make them consistent.
