History of Fashion Paper Topic Proposal

1990s Street Style in Harajuku, photographed and published in Fruits Magazine. When I was younger and finding my own fashion aesthetic in a fully uniformed environment, Harajuku fashion was a major inspiration for me and its roots and subversion are really interesting. This is my second choice.

Glam-rock band Kiss photographed walking the streets of NYC in the 70s. I love the aesthetics and subjects of this image, but also the juxtaposition of the subjects against the normally-dressed pedestrians around them. My personal style is also influenced by glam-rock aesthetics, such as my insistence on always wearing platforms, and I’d love to see how the vestiges of glam rock live on in today’s fashion. This is my third choice.

A photo from the mid-80s of students at a private school. I grew up in a uniformed prep school environment for the entirety of my schooling, so it speaks to my personal history. I would love to explore the history and origins of school uniforms, and perhaps even their relationships with class, repression, etc. This is my first choice.
