The ‘gift ’project is one of the projects I did for my studio class last semester, we were separated into pairs and asked to design a gift for our patenters. The framework that inspired my work included both the work I saw in MoMA and the interview I had with my partner.
I organized the fragmented information I get through the interview trough casual conversations. At first, I wanted to make something practical, so I decided to design patterns then printed them on a tote bag as the gift for him. According to the requirements of our assignment, the design should be related to the art works we saw in MoMA, so I decided to look through the works that my partner liked. In the following classes, we talked a lot about Korean Hip-hop artists. Then there’s like a spark in my mind: Why not designing a real CD as a gift for him?

Then I designed a series products related to music—poster, concert tickets and cd covers as a gift package for him. The method I use is to combine his identity and interest (hip-hop music) with another art works he likes (Paintings by Giorgio de Chirico ) In the foreground of my design, I used parts of his painting which had a emotionless statue at the top. I also added some traditional Korean elements like the colorful patterns and architectures.
The most important I learned was how to communicate with a ‘client’ in need. My partner is Chan Ju Park, a native Korean boy who was born and grew up in Seoul. This is the first time that I work with someone from a different country. He told me lots of interesting things about Korea and Korean culture, which has strong influence in my design for this project.
I used the communication and interviewing skills in a following project which required us talk with strangers on the street. I would definitely explore my ideas in this project in the future, because I’m always interested in different cultures and want to learn more about them during the process of making artworks.
