Series One (Pressed Flowers)
RULE 1: Must have at least one pressed (hammered) flower
RULE 2: Use watercolor to mimc the pressed flowers
Series Two: (Gum wrappers)
RULE 1: After chewing gum each day, incorporate gum wrappers
RULE 2: Incorporate natural elements such as flowers, plants and etc.
Day One – Why Must We Wait
Why do we have to distinguish one based on their ethnicity/skin tone? The world should be a place for two people from different countries, background, culture, upbringing to interact with each other and they should be treated equally. The exchange program may be the beginning of something new: put an end to racial discrimination. The two airplanes represents the two, having fun together. And the falling petals consists of two different type of petals mixing in together, falling together.
Day Two – Just An Ordinary Day
New York City can be a bit overwhelming, especially due to sensory overload. The lungs represents the air we breathe and the nature incorporation represents the beauty of all New York’s flaws. The amount of flowers and leaves supposedly represents sensory overload.
Day Three – Envy, Envied
As a child, I’ve always wanted my family to care about Christmas as much as other families do. In the first series, I used watercolor to mimicked the pressed flower on the left. The purple at the bottom right shows a closer representation of the actual pressed flower, the “ordinary family”, while the small pink one (different from the two) represents me feeling left out and filled with envy.
Day Four – Somethings We Just Cannot See
Why must we only believe in the things we see? God does exist!
Flowers are falling little by little, leaving evidence of Christianity (the Bible and believers) in the world, the heart shaped gum wrap represents God and the idea of balloons with a basket of falling flowers represents spreading the gospel. The second series was to try to mimc the pressed flower’s brush strokes and technique as much as possible to convey the idea of “something’s we just can’t see”.
Day Five: Dysfunctional Amygdala
Many people are afraid to talk in public, it is not an easy talk especially when we tend to overthink what people may be thinking about you, judge you. In the first series, I deliberately made it brighter and bolder to show how introverts feel when they have to speak out loud. In the second series i wanted to convey the idea of hope in having confidence in the future, cranes symbolizing adventurous and boldness and to have two of them shows we are not alone, there are other people suffering the same issue.
Day Six: What Do We Have Here
We all tend to take ourselves, our lives for granted. Having the opportunity to live to do what we love is a gift. The first series consists of same hue flowers to convey that we all make look like the same type of flower, but each flower is different: amount of petals, pattern, order, shade and etc. The second series conveys showering with gifts, and with the bouquet of flowers represents the gift of life.
