Reflection of the Bridge4 Project, “Since Then”

My initial idea for this project is inspired by Pablo Picasso’s drawing. The cubist concept and use of color interested me a lot. Thus, I wanted to have color contrast in my ensembles. Also, in Picasso’s drawing, he used simple line to draw human body, so I also wanted to have those geometric shapes in my designs, but they need to show the body curve too. Because the title of my seminar research paper is about how the fashion bloggers can affect the promotion, trends and brand awareness of fashion brands, I did a lot of research about the fashion bloggers as a job. While doing the research, I noticed that fashion bloggers’ clothes is casual, but also contain some high fashion or conceptual ideas in it. Thus, in my design, I chose tight skirt which is popular and casual, and I also chose the arm decorations that are more belong to high fashion.

For the fabric choosing, I mainly used leather-liked fabric to create the skirt and arm decoration. For the belt, I chose the fabric that has brighter surface to create the effect of contrast. I think my design is more appropriate for some semi-formal events like cocktail night. The tight maxi skirt can show the body curve, and the leather-liked material can give people the sense of how valuable the skirt is.

Through this project, I think I have an overall improvement on the sewing skill and pattern drawing, and I have a completely new impression about fashion. I did not know how to draw the pattern of skirt before, thus I spent a lot of time on learning how to draw the pattern of skirt . Also,  sewing different patterns’ fabric was also very challengeable. I needed to be careful about every sewing line because if I did not do it well for this line, it may affected other patterns’ sewing. It was very time consuming, which needed me to be very patient. I even restarted this part several times because I was not satisfy with the sewing and pattern cutting. My initial idea was to cut the fabrics having different patterns, then I noticed that the fabrics might fall apart, so I decided to use the muslin to create a skirt first and then attach the fabrics on the muslin. Also, through this project, I was more familiar with other fashion materials, such as snaps. When I did the arm decorations, I spent a lot of time on how to stabilize the snaps on the fabrics but do not show too many threads.

Before this project, I thought fashion as a whole thing. After this project, I realize that the fashion illustrations, materials and sewing, they are different. After we finish the drawing, how to make the drawing to reality is a difficult and time consuming process.
