Process:

We started out taking apart our the objects and ended up choosing a little plate that hung around the perfume bottle, which you can see in the upper right corner on the image below. It is measured approximately 1cm on each side.

Once we had chosen the part we were gonna use we started playing around with what we could make out of it. Since the piece was so tiny we decided to enlarge it to approx. 10cm on each side. We felt it added a dynamic to enlargen it and made it more interesting. At first, we thought that the idea was to create something out of one piece. So our initial ideas were to create either an espresso tray, a small shelf or a kind of kitchen tool. But once we realized we had to have the same piece multiplied in one creation we had to rethink. We ended up wanting to create something less obvious.

The sketch above was our last sketch and what we had in mind when picking out the wood. We wanted to make this tray (on the picture), connecting the pieces with wire. When we sat down and experimented with connecting the pieces we realized that it would be more interesting to try another approach.

Once we had cut all the pieces we used sandpaper to make the pieces smooth and less sharp. We then measured the holes in all the pices and used the drill to make all the four holes in the wood piece. We made a decition to make this holes, unlike the original object to create an opening for us to connect the pieces. Without these holes, we had very little to work with if we wanted to connect them some way.

We tried several materials to connect the wood pieces with, with the wire that we bought at la reserve des arts, with several threads that we found at home. Eventually, we decided on this much more flexible wire that was thicker and more sturdier but much more easy to shape.  We also liked how it looked with the silver colored wire together with the wood.

Final outcome:

We ended up creating a shield necklace. We wanted to create something that had some sort of function but at the same time, can be interpreted in different ways. For us this is a necklace and a shield. We wanted to give an idea of protection and thereby the name shield necklace. The necklace protects you but at the same time, it makes you more vulnerable since it constraints your movement and control of your body. It does not cover the female breasts completely, the protection is in the middle of the breasts and protects the heart.
