At first if I had to guess how much time I spent on my phone or laptop, I would have assumed a huge chunk of my time would have been understandable. I would said, eight hours. Once we were assigned this Media Journal, I downloaded “Moments”, an app to track my screen time. I used it for a couple days as a reference point and saw that I activated my screens only two or three hours a day. That is what I thought my “Media” consumption was until I remembered that media takes so many different forms that it is hard to tell when you consume it and when you do not. I think majority of my day is spent looking at some form of media created by someone to communicate something. I realised that things like music in speakers or the TV were forms of media that I would consume subconsciously too–meaning I would turn them on and leave them playing in the background. Apart from that I started noticing how many street signs or posters I would “ignore” when I was walking on sidewalks and how many would actually catch my eye and take up maybe a minute of my day. Everything from branded coffee cups to graphic t shirts to seeing someones tattoos turned into media consumption in my brain. As I reflect on how my eyes opened up after paying attention to my media consumption, I realise how vital a role media plays in our lives today. The mind is always stimulated, even as I sit here in my room, amongst my posters, pictures and speakers, staring at my laptop to write an assignment.
