I thought that the presentation was well intended but I do not think that it was effective. I think that Murs was very interested in himself and himself as a brand but he did not have any content. I didn’t understand what he was trying to use to sell himself or his brand’s stuff. I think it was very sad that he disregarded his degree the second things got tough. I would have appreciated if the school had selected an online artist who gained a following by sharing their work and concepts. It would have been interesting to hear how they combat theft and change their retoric to match the audience online. There are definitely a lot of things I feel that I could learn from an instagram influencer, but I would have appreciated if the speaker had know what/who/why they are influencing. I believe that people gain a lot of power through instagram in the same way people gained when newspapers could be mass printed. It opens a door for people to share their thoughts, work and opinions. 27,000 people is a broad reach and a great opportunity to speak to and interact with strangers that not everyone has a chance to talk to. The way that he talked about his followers was arrogant and frankly disrespectful. He seemed to talk down about them and assume that they were obsessed with him and regarded him as a god. If he respected them as much as he said he did, I would think that he would use his platform and power for something other than trying to sell to them.
