Actions speak louder than words – Feedback

In my Seminar class, Professor asked us to act our ritual of technology out with action instead of words infant of everyone. From looking at others’ and presenting mine, I have learned that “Actions speak louder than words.” By physically performing it, visually observing it, the ritual of technology is so much more recognizable, relatable, reflect-able and reasonable.

Pierina and Cosette’s group:

They designed a code scan belt which can be transformed into 3 gestures when people scan their card towards the scanning machine in 3 different situations. The work is aesthetically fashionable, useful, problem-solving and very relatable to us students, especially who spend much time every day trying to find their cards and scan. Something they can consider to improve is to maybe involve the entire body with the gestures instead of just limited to the waist and the hip.

Me and Claire Zhou’s group:

We presented 2 gestures, one is “So Sassy”, and another one is “Anti Social”. We made this repetitive gestures, which involves the whole body even facial expression, according to the two social groups of people using phones. After presenting it, we realized that we are so much more clear about more gestures as rituals instead of just interactions with the design.

Suzy and Camile’s Group:

They also have 2 gesture depending on different hight holding phones. The idea of “restrictive and being controlled” is a new point of view towards how technology affects out gesture, indifferent from just how technology invents new gestures.

Nassar:

He presented 3 gestures, which shows the development and process of affection. His work has the idea of “ turn on and turn off” shows how people react with and without the phone. Something really interests me is how he uses a really light fabric to show the contract heaviness technology puts on people’s shoulders.

Clover:

Her team’s design is based on a metaphor for the relation between technology and people, which is very unique and eye-catching. By connecting technology with umbilical cord is suggesting that technology has become a necessity for people to survive like air, water, and food. It is very relatable and its ritual is very recognizable.

In conclusion, it is very surprising how different group has interpreted the theme of this project differently and created various incredible works and ritual that really broadened my view of how technology rapidly changing human beings.
