…Hedrons

In my Space & Materiality class, we learned 5 3D shapes with really complicated names. They are Tetrahedron, Hexahedron, Octahedron, Dodecahedron, Icosahedron.

 Tetrahedron

 Hexahedron

 Octahedron

 Dodecahedron

 Icosahedron

I made these paper pentagons through drawing circles and aligning the center points together to create the regular triangles, therefore all the triangles can be equal and I can make better shapes, the same method with the pentagons.

Here are the methods of creating regular triangles and pentagons.

After I made these shapes in paper, I chose 4 out of 5 to create them with different material as a tester for the final lamp project.

I want to experience with multiple materials and understand their characters and if I found pleasure working with them. The obstacle of this project is to joint these materials together without TAPE or GLUE!

I use as many materials as I possibly can.

I used reclaimed materials:

Cereal box, makeup box, chopstick, tea bags, and marshmallow.

I used planar materials:

Plastic, mirror reflective plastic, Cereal box, makeup box, and tea bags.

I used linear materials:

Chopstick, feathers, and pins.

laser cut process:

I used laser cut on the Cereal box, I was planning to use it on makeup box as well, but the ink on the makeup box is not able to be cut. I used the same method I used on paper with AI to graph the components.

As the substitution of glue and tape, I tried much different attachment methods, such as pinning, strings, marshmallows as sticky balls, and wires.

After testing all these methods and materials,  I found my favorite material to be plastic board and my favorite attachment method to be strong sewing.

After this process, I’ve learned the meaning of community. Making joints without glue and tape, taught me how to avoid force communication between people. Imagining the joints to be the connections between people in the community. The key is communications, collaborations, and adaptation.
