Little Mushroom (mycelium) Earrings

Earrings Design

Mycelium process

<<< mixing in a mixing bowl

<<< fitting them into the circular molds, fitting the remained into the gloves for fun instead of wasting.

Now due to getting expired Mycelium pack, these ones will be observed. I and Stella will start the second trial with a new mycelium kit.

Second try!!

<<< adding flour again to the kit after 5 days. (The new Kit grows really healthily, without any green spots or weird smells.)

<<< taping the breathing holes. (7 days)

I first left three little holes to let it “breath” because I thought it’s alive so it must need air to breathe, then I found out it didn’t so I taped the breathing hold.

<<< Taking the Mycelium out of the mold

<<< Baking them in the oven for 30 minutes

<<< redesign with available materials.

<<< Gathering materials and decorating the mycelium balls.

Thoughts:

Our final day in the garden made my favorite day in the month. I love how beautiful this garden has tuned into since winter. I loved the meditation section where I listen to and even create my own music with these magical instruments. I was excited to see how students from a different area of art added different works with recycled materials. Because my earrings are modeled by the ones who create fashion wearables, I get to see how integrated materials are and how the same material can create totally different things. I started to see the beauty in plastic, no longer just a material that pollutes nature, once it turns into a piece of work, its value upgrades. I was amazed to see the community create various and “crazy” outfits with just recycled material, most of them have never studied art, I guess creativity and dedication are all it needs. I created 4 pairs of earring with mycelium and decorated with materials left for my other art projects. Unfortunately and unpredictably the mycelium turned out to weight more than plastic and is about the weight of foam, which is a little too heavy for earrings, but I loved to see the engagement and interaction from people for these special mushroom earrings. I very much loved this project, it is pure creativity and a heart to rescue our nature, and also just so pure, meditating and joyful to gathered and chilled in this beautiful community gardens with people with same ambitions in a sunny afternoon, especially after sinking in this fast-moving modern world for so long.

All in all, it was a brand new and surprising experience for me to use biomaterials to create art! I enjoyed Sustainable System.
