Corresponding with Judith Butler’s keynote address this week at the New School conference “Borders and the Politics of Mourning,” Ryan Gustafson’s Futures of Queer Theory is reading Butler’s “Gender is Burning: Questions of Appropriation and Subversion,” a chapter of Bodies That Matter: On the Discursive Limits of “Sex.” Alongside this reading, students will also view Paris Is Burning and read bell hooks’s “Is Paris Burning?,” from Black Looks: Race and Representation.
