Final Observation

Over the course of this semester, I have been observing the relationship(s) between individuals, wether they are intimate or not. Further, I have been examining my own long distance relationship, for it directly correlates to my final project in Studio this semester. In saying that I have been observing personal interactions between others, I mean that I have been observing body language and the affect of physical touch in either a conversation or overall relationship. Watching others talk, and have conversations across the room – paying keen attention to facial expressions, hand position, etc, I have been able to see how people are feeling, and sometimes even what two people are discussing without even being present in that conversation. People are either willing to submit to the other, in hopes of resolution, or they are unwilling – and become more dominant in a conversation, completely taking over and engulfing the other with dialogue. That being said, I have also observed groups of people coming together for a greater cause. I noticed that even though everyone was on their own agenda, they seemingly were able to come together and fight for a greater cause.

For my final project, I am creating a sculptural piece that involves both mine, and my boyfriend’s hands, tied together by thick red string to show the strength of our relationship across such a long distance. Because of this, I have been observing the way that we interact with each other in a non-physical sense to possibly pull something out and into my work. Because nothing is necessarily physical, I am unsure of how I can incorporate this idea… I mean, the entire work is dedicated around the distance between us.
