Observation 1: A tree in Union Square

Title: A tree in Union Square

Date: Wednesday, Feb 1, 2017

Time Start: 8:00am

Time End: 8:10am

Where: Union Square (Refer to map below.)

Atmosphere: 26 degrees, the air was cold but clear, a slight wind was blowing from the right side of my face, the bench I was sitting on was cold but bearable.

Having only 10 minutes to observe, I had to take note of several elements around me all at once, while drawing a sketch of a tree. This allows me in be in a place where there is little to no capacity for thought, but to solely observe my surroundings.

I linked my observations (not limited) to the following systems:

Interdependent system

-The system of plants (the tree)

-The squirrels and birds that depend on the tree

-The man-made bird nest

-The tree depending on the soil of Union Square

Transportation system

-Distant honks and bus screeching

-Movement of people who walked passed me

-Animals who walked past me (Animals who use the tree as a mode of transportation)

-People who use animals as a mode of transportation (Blind dog guides)

-Union Square as a centre of different transportation modes (Urban Planning)
