Tension and Compression (DIGITAL FABRICATION)

The aim of this project was to study the tension and compression of the human body. The study will then be translated and visualized through material exploration.

Research

Experimenting Smocking

I experimented with smocking to see how it can portray tension and compression.

I decided to use the human neck to explore tension and compression.

Sketches

After making some sketches, I decided not to use the smocking method, but I decided to make a bellow-like structure around the neck.

Process

I started making the final piece and I also made the clasp on Rhino and 3D-printed it on the makerbot.

Final Work

My final work explores the tension and compression of the neck muscles. The neck muscles and nerve endings are one of the most important parts of the human body where we often experience stress and uncomfort. The final work is collapsible and has the potential to become a hoodie.
