Introduction to Fashion Christopher Breward’s Aphorism Response

The first aphorism I chose to write about is “Fashion is intensely personal in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.”

When I think of fashion I think of “self expression”. I believe that people judge and make impressions on others purely based on what they see. Clothing often speaks louder than words as they are the visual representation of that person. Often times those who wear bold bright styles are not afraid to stand out and be different from the general population. People who wear more basics and muted tones can be judged as conservative or private people. I feel like the clothing people chose to wear automatically labels people into one specific personality however this is not the case. What I admire about fashion the most is how versatile it is. I’m able to channel different characters everyday by my clothes. Overall fashion is a creative outlet for everyone to express themselves.

The second aphorism I chose to write about is “Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Though its forms we have an opportunity to reunite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.”

I’ve always thought of fashion as wearable art. Within every medium of art there is a concept, material, and execution. Fashion design is no different from any other medium. Art, fashion, and science are all interconnected as clothing construction requires textiles that are tested to withstand people living and wearing them. The act of making the garments is similar to building a sculpture to fit around the human body. Math is also extremely present in fashion as precise measuring is required to properly tailor a garment to fit nicely. Extra fabric such as tulle was added in skirts of dresses to create volume. Fashion designers are artists who design for people to wear their art pieces.
