Time Embodied: Cartier Bresson-The Decisive Moment

Americans in Paris, October 1947  Yale Joel

This early 1900s photo was took in Paris. Under the Eiffel Tower. The compisition of this vintage picture was done by the color. The left side of this photograph is darken and blurry. The right side of the image is brighter and is clearer. From the picture itself, we may not say it is the best picture I have ever seen. However, the historic feeling and the modern lifestyle at middle twenty century is what strikes viewers. The little food cart with a friendly woman with a large hat. Pretty girls in front of the cart disgussed about their life and how the food taste. This picture pushed us to think about what was happened and what did the girls in the picture talked about. What is the taste of the food on their hands. Is the food spicy? sweet? or sour? In my perspective, it should be sweet. Telling a story is not always conveying facts or posting political views. Simple story like this image can also be a interesting one to appreciate. The photographer is talented in choosing stories happened around him when finding resources.

In Yale’s other photographs, he also implied story telling process into his choice of view under his camera…
