Artist Statement

As an artist, I use my artwork and creative processes as a way of understanding and relaxing my mind. Such emotional release results in pieces that are highly personal, but hopefully adaptable to all. My pieces at times are left at a level of abstraction and minimalism that enables the viewer to tailor their experience to their life. I find myself to be particular with my subject matter, never being too general, but giving a mass of details to that specific subject. My main interest with art is myself; I find that my mind holds so many intricacies and mysteries that I can’t help but try to uncover who I am. Through developing my artwork and writing I hope to further learn more about myself and see how my psyche is similar or different from others.

My writing my pieces, such as “A True Fake Self” or my “Truth and Mercy” poems, come from a specific place in my brain, but when I write I abstract them, sometimes omitting connections to myself in order to have a closer experience with the viewer. Other pieces, such as “The Top Shelf” or “The Voltaire of Underwear”, are a comprehensive account of personal experiences, straying away from being esoteric and being intimate with my thoughts. These more obviously personal pieces are still relatable because of their subject matter and language. My studio pieces encompass similar themes through a variety of mediums, such as drawing or assemblage. Hopefully through further exploration and experimentation I can figure how to merge these two types of creative styles, maybe even merging my writings and art pieces together to make artwork even more well rounded.
