Dress Practice Log Reflection

A theme that emerged from my dress log was what it means to dress as an artistic individual. This comes in the form of either representing yourself as a brand or representing another brand. The impact of how dress promotes your artistic identity or the concept you’re working with is so powerful that it should not be taken lightly. Doing the dress log reminded me of the importance of being intentional as there is a grey area with designers in dressing professional enough but also unique to speak for your brand. Something I noticed about myself is that there is a huge contrast in the way I dress depending on the occasion; Being the perfectionist that I am in how I am perceived and judged by others, I put a lot of thought into how I dress myself when I need to make an impression. However, on a normal day when there is no need to impress anyone, I dress completely for myself and comfort, disregarding any judgement from others. I realized that I appreciate the body by dressing in the closest way to its natural and simple form – I do not overload the body with excess adornment but rather prefer a more refined and simple way of dressing that, to me, is more consistent with the grace of the body. However, I also know that I like to cover the body in dressing for a confident comfort. There is an interplay of a sort between appreciating the body through resembling its simplicity as well as covering it up – The body avoids being burdened by dressing simply and is given comfort when covered up through the freedom of movement.
