Fabric Swatches &. Ways of Arrangement

Three Ways of Fabric Arrangement introduced:

1) By Color

2) By Composition / Material

3) By Ease to see weave / Thread Size

This was the first arrangement I did for the fabric samples, as I noticed there is a general theme of color in my samples. From the far left, I started with the most saturated green (the table lamp I had has a warm yellow hue so the color was not so apparent on the photo) and as the value got lightened by the swatch with embroidery as well as the leaf design shown on the bottom sample, I introduced gray swatches and further on into black and blue. I noticed the patterns on some of my swatches can serve as a transitional stage of the color trend I developed (as seen from the bottom right corner of the photo – the transition from black to natural beige). In general, by arranging the fabrics by color, I realized I have a great interest in choosing color that will create a natural environment.

This second arrangement of swatches was done by looking at the composition/material of the samples. Starting from the natural jute on the top left, I transited into natural cotton (the navy blue piece above the jute) and natural wool (the black suit piece below the jute), and further into blend materials that were a mix of natural material, linen and viscose.  Eventually, the samples on the far right were made only with Polyester materials.

This third arrangement I paid attention to the weave of the fabrics. From the finest satin to the rawest jute, I arranged the series by observing the weave and feeling the thread size (with the method of touching and rubbing). In general, the thickness and rigidity of the fabric samples increased from left to right. I think this was due to the thicker yarn used in the weaving that contribute to both a clearer thread direction and also a heavier weight. I wondered if the tension that pulls the thread varies as well or shows a certain order among these fabric samples.
