Project 2 – Drawing/Imaging

Coming from Saudi Arabia and moving to New York, it was a drastic change for me. It was actually a culture shock. It was so fascinating for me to view the stark contrast between my hometown and Manhattan. Not only the people back home dressed differently, but also the architecture was completely dissimilar. So, for project 2, I decided to combine both cultures into one collage. This collage displays the transition from moving back home from Saudi Arabia to moving to a busy urban city such as Manhattan. I incorporated three different portraits of myself that are completely contrasted; one photograph displays me in a Hijab, which is what women wear in Saudi Arabia, and the other photographs display my hair open and wearing a denim jacket to represent the urban city. I purposely placed these portraits in their position to show the juxtaposition. Even though a clear contrast exists between the architectures of these places, but placing them beside each other just enhances the juxtaposition even more. I chose these specific monumental buildings purposely as they have much relevance and sentiment in my life, one being the very famous monumental Mosque in Mecca, and the other being The New School University Center.
