Reflection of Project 3

I’ve always had passion and love for art, hence the main reason why I came to this school, and more importantly, move to this city. While documenting a day in the city, I couldn’t help but observe the art, the marvelous skyscrapers and famous buildings. So I decided to capture photographs specifically of buildings that I find enduring as well as some of the art around the city, this way, the audience can synthesize my experience in the city through an artistic way.

In the beginning, we had to gather images of one, two, and three perspective images, which I found was a fun exercise. It not only gave me a chance to go out and explore the city but also made me more aware of the perspectives and angles of different areas and buildings. I would say it was quite a challenge for me to come up with an idea of a map at first, and using Photoshop and Illustrator was already difficult enough. But after several drafts, I finally came up with an idea. I decided to create a zoomed in version of the map of Manhattan with an image I chose of graffiti art, this is to depict the art in the City. I incorporated pictures of buildings that fascinated me onto the map and played around with perspective. Not to mention, I created a list of adjectives on illustrator that best describe my images and chose the colors that best represent these descriptions. So keeping that in mind, I changed the tint of the buildings into the colors that matched the adjectives. This is to give it more of a mood rather than just it being depictive.

After finishing my collage, I used the gridline technique to enlarge the map onto a larger paper and used acrylic paint and pencil as mediums. I left the rest of the paper blank to bring emphasis and focus on the map

If I were to approach this assignment differently, I would have maybe added more zoomed in photos of buildings where the detail would show even more, but other than that I am very satisfied with the way it turned out and deciding to paint it made the piece stronger.
