W.E.B. Dubois

In The Souls of Black Folk, W.E.B Dubois shows a glimpse of  the double consciousness that African Americans have to constantly go through. Through different anecdotes, he draws out the struggle of having to live with two different identities, one being an American or how others would perceive them as and another being who they really are behind “the veil.” This duality has been constructed because of our American history of slavery, bigotry, and discrimination towards the African Americans. Even though people seems to be more understanding over time, they, who haven’t experience the same suffering that the African Americans had to go through will never be able to truly understand their pain.
