Toolkit Proposal & Sketch

game board design

The Food Waste & The Composting Bin board game is designed to teach a way to reduce food waste, which is a serious threatening problem that we often neglect. Almost one-third of the food produced gets thrown away for various reasons. When these food waste gets decomposed in the landfill, it creates methane which harms our health. By having this problem be taught through a simple and fun board game, kids would be able to become familiar with the ways to lessen the production of food waste.

My toolkit will include a board game, game pieces, question cards, and a poster teaching about quick and easy ways to reduce food waste. The game board would be designed through Illustrator and in a way that it would allow the kids to easily understand how to play the game. I will print the design and glue it to an illustration board. I will cover the entire back of the board with muslin and then cut the board in half (without cutting the muslin) so that it could be folded in half for easier mobility. I would make the question cards to be around 20 to 30 and have the logo on one side and the question and the answer on the other side. I also need to make sure to include an instruction sheet. For the design aspect, I want to create cartoon characters to appeal to my target audience.

To play the game, the players will each choose a gummy worm as a game piece. I chose to have gummies to appeal to kids. The players will choose who the first player would be and in which order the game would be played. When the game starts, the person on the right will pick up a card and read the question to the current player. If the players answer it right, they will be able to move their game piece one step forward, approaching the finish line. The first to finish all ten steps and to successfully finish the composting process wins.

The game board serves as the first tool as it would teach the players how to make a composting bin. The cards will be the other tool as it would have information pertaining to the food waste problem. Finally, the poster included in the box will show easy ways to reduce food waste.

My goal for creating this toolkit is to allow the players to become more conscious about the dangers of poorly regulated food waste by looking at an insight into the severity of the problem. I hope that in the end, they would realize the need to take action to solve these issues.

One of the challenges that I was dealing with in the progress of brainstorming and designing this game was the branding. I wanted the logo and the visual as appealing as possible. I had trouble deciding on one design and kept changing the display of the game board.
