Project Proposal 2

Section 1: Project Information
“What are you doing?”

  • Project Title: Creature
  • HJ Kang (kangh694@newschool.edu)
  • Project Log-line: Capturing the beauty in ugly, the familiarity in distant.

What are you making? 1. 2D sketches of the “creature” 2. 3D digital version of the “creature”
Who is the audience? adults
What’s it about (basic content)? My two projects are going to incorporate a character design that will be in a “children’s book for adults”.

Section 2: Objectives
“Why are you doing it?”
(8-10 sentences)

As adults, we are told that fairy tales aren’t for us anymore, but sometimes we long for the nostalgic moments where we opened up a gateway of imagination reading a fairy tale book to bed. Thus, I want to create a character that would be designed for a “children’s book but for adults”. I will create multiple 2D sketches of the character as well as a 3D digital version. The story may not seem all too happy and bubbly but rather dark and grotesque. However, the depth of the story will uniquely move those that are too old for just happy fairy tales but too young to stop imagining. The main purpose of this project is for the audience to find warmth and to sympathize from the rather grotesque and the unknown character. “Finding beauty in the ugly and familiarity in the distant.” What distinguishes my project from everything else that’s already out there is the unique character itself and the unique content being for “children’s book for adults”.

Section 3: Methodology
“How are you going to do it?”

(2-3 sentences)

I will first start off with the 2D sketches which would be done through Procreate. This will likely take about 3 weeks. Then, I will move on to the 3D digital version which will take the next 3 weeks. I will have to look into more 3D sketch tools as I’m not familiar with 3Ds. Finally, I will take the last week to look back at my two projects and fix anything that feels to be retouched.

Deliverables:
an understanding of the character and how it will play out in the story. 2D sketches and a 3D digital design with the narration of the storyline.

Schedule:
week 1~3: 1st pr0ject

week 4~6: 2nd project

week 7: review

Section 4: Budget
“How much will it cost?”

NA

Section 5: Additional research

Coraline, Corpse Bride

Section 6: Appendix
Sketches, prototypes you already have, and inspiration images

Back up plan for the 3D: tunnel book (accordion book) of the setting

HJ, I’ve always loved your potato head monster? design with all the little arms and legs so I’m really excited to see how it’ll look in 3D. I’m curious whether your 2D side of the project will explore the character’s narrative or just be like a blueprint of what your 3D will look like. I think you’ve started a very compelling story with the idea of a fairytale for adults and finding comfort in the ugly, and I’d love to hear more about that. Maybe for the 2D part you can develop the story more, even in text form with a few little illustrations like old fairytale books could work, or a simple 2D backdrop for your creature to interact with. I think there’s a lot of potential to explore the monster’s story because it already brings up a lot of questions due to it’s appearance and I’d love to see more of the world it inhabits. Great job!
