SA 4: Closing Reflection

Throughout the seminar class, I have gained a more dynamic insight into the broad concept of visual culture. Initially, I only had a very vague and shallow definition, thinking that it was just the cultural information people could obtain through sight. However, after experiencing the combination of various forms of exercises, I gradually realize the importance of every visual element around me. Almost every piece of design is arranged in such a way to achieve their own agenda. Instead of seeing a work and just saying, “Oh it is beautiful/ effective”, I begin to dive into something deeper to develop my analytical skills: what makes it so beautiful/ effective? What is the message the artist want to convey? Why is the composition arranged in this way? Why is this color scheme being chosen? Practicing to examine other artists work also aid me to consider such fundamental and significant elements when I want to produce my own works. I am glad that I gain such acknowledgement not only through the traditional way of reading tedious texts, but through a more engaging experience by visiting museums, watching documentaries, and analyzing something that is closely related to the current trend. Before taking this course, I thought the visual component was the most important thing in creating artwork, so I went straight into the making process after I had the inspiration. Actually, doing related research to support the message that myself as an artist want to express is as significant. It makes my work more compelling and rounded. My challenge in this class is to participate in the discussion actively. Sometimes I find it difficult to gather my thoughts together in a short period of time and express them verbally. Overall, I enjoyed this course a lot and was thankful for the skills I learnt in these four months.
