Object Redux Gameboi

This collaborative project took the concept of the Gameboy, a device whose purpose was for entertainment and juxtaposed it with the sounds of the most prominent headlines of 2016-2017. Conceptually and visually reworking this idea of human dependency on technology and sociopolitical error throughout history. In the video two girls tattoo on each other all the headlines that are mentioned, their way of doing the movement, this idea of poor video quality and the frustration produced by the length/ cuts of the video further developed this idea. The original presentation format shown first in a black box setting was not successful in conveying the concept clearly. The video and images were seen as too small and the quality blurry to the point that the comprehension of the video was lost. As a result, the second set of images shows the re-worked display on a much larger scale.

Both the original object and our “object redux” are of similar size. They both contain similar buttons/controllers and a screen. There are evidently several differences between the object chosen and the “object redux.” The act of gaming is diminished in our version, and instead, we focus on an aspect that is specifically the aftermath or effect of using this object. The lack of control over what appears on the console’s screen is also a noticeable difference that is emphasized for its much larger meaning. Man, in this day and age, cannot control media. The technique of incorporating ready-made media headlines and screenshots is a method that I want to further pursue in my final piece additionally to the use of multimedia resources. The concept of media and man is a thematic similarity between this project and what I would also like to pursue in my final project. I am interested in the interaction of capturing media and its portrayal through technology. Precisely how words, photographs, and images fail to portray a real life situation/event.
