Int Seminar2: Orozco Room

On Thursday’s class we went to the Orozco Room which locate in the Lang building on 12th street, seventh floor. At first we got in to the Orozco Room, the light was off so everyone was wondering around with curious and a little scare, because it was so dark in there. As soon as we turn on the light, the fear was gone, I was amaze by the painting on the wall. The room was a perfect square and is not really big. It ‘s easy to said that this room is for a meeting or conference and the painting on the wall are all in a brick red tone, and it looks like each wall represent a different story most of them are sad stories. There are people who looks like arrest by the police, slaves and people praying. The painting in the center catch my eyes for the first sight was people with different racial and having discussion. Also, look closer to the center painting, you would see the dates and the author’s name. It showed us the painting was done by the 1931.

For the material of the wall, I believe it was stone, because you could see the surface of the painting with rough texture. Also when you look closer, you will see there are sparkle on the painting, it also make me wondering why. Lighting in there was’t not really bright, for me a room to have meeting or discussion usually with bright, white light.

Moreover, I would said the painting on the wall were pretty weird, I didn’t know why the author decided to paint all the sad historical stories in there, also all the earthy color he used make the room a little uncomfortable in a way. It might a little too much for a decoration. Also I thought there were way too much doors for a little room, there were four doors, what is the other side of the door?

I thought it was pretty interesting that Malgo said this room was always open back then but now it became so hard to get in. I wanted to know what The New School decided to change this room to private space, why the author paint the wall like this? What is the purpose? What was him tried to express in the room ?
