Integrative Studio Fashion: Bridge 2

My bridge 2 project was a garment I created after doing research on ritual wear and modesty for Muslim women. I learned about the key aspects of Islam and well as the restrictions of clothing for both sexes.

I created these gloves out of silk and made a gold embroidery, basing it off of the rule that only women are allowed to wear gold and silk. After looking at designers such as Anniesa Hasibuan and Ayana Ife, I wanted to make something that was modest yet modern.

They wee inspired by an article written by a Muslim woman who spoke about the issue of having to refuse handshakes, especially from men. These gloves would serve their purpose in showing modesty, protecting, and greeting. The embroidered words on the right hand, “Nice to Meet You”, are made in a friendly bookman swash that is reminiscent of the bags seen in New York. A polite way to greet women in Muslim countries is to place the right hand over the chest. These gloves would help to reinforce this message for those unfamiliar.

This was my first time embroidering and sewing, and so it took me a while and a few failed gloves to get them to look acceptable.  Nevertheless, it was a fun project.
