I Am…

Shift:  In the OED, shift is defined as “a movement to do something, a beginning” (accessed Aug. 28, 2017).  I believe I am constantly changing, adapting to different circumstances as I am introduced to new environments and surrounded by different thinkers and opinions.  In this particular instance, I am starting my studies at Parsons School of Design in NYC, and for the first time, I am fully surrounded by creative thinkers and an amazing support system provided by the school.  My shift from a conservative suburban area to this diverse and progressive city, has allowed me to feel free in my self-expression and creation.  And here, I will begin a new journey of learning and discovery which will hopefully supplement my career as a successful designer.

Thoughtful:  In the OED, thoughtful is defined as “disposed to think about or consider matters” (accessed Aug. 28, 2017).  As an artist wanting to study sustainable design in depth, I want to create pieces that will have a positive impact on not only myself and my career as a student and designer, but on also the world around me, whether it be environment or other humans.  I want my work to be carefully thought out and sustainable in every step of the process.  I believe that I am thorough in my research and in finding options for all the ways that I can execute something to get the best possible result.

Inquisitive:  In the OED, inquisitive is defined as “desirous of or eager for knowledge” (accessed Aug. 28, 2017).  I want to take advantage the time and opportunity I am provided with at the Parsons School of Design to explore and discover new mediums and to learn things from those of different majors or backgrounds with different skill levels.  I am sure many mistakes will be made in the process of my creations and explorations, however, I believe it is better to fumble and make mistakes than to have not tried or gone out of my comfort zone at all.  I am surrounded by talented and resourceful people, who can hopefully answer any of my questions or share their experiences and failures.  I also don’t just want to study design or fashion.  I want to expand my knowledge on science and ecology, or the different societies of the world and the interactions between humans and their environment, or coding and computer sciences, and hopefully weave and intermingle these totally different subjects into something innovative.

Restless:  In the OED, restless is defined as “constantly in motion, continually operating” (accessed Aug. 28, 2017).  I am someone who would rather be too busy than have too much free time.  Though I would not say that I get bored easily, I am constantly wanting to learn and experience new things, whether it be through reading or taking classes or traveling.  I have large ambitions and am constantly wanting to make these things happen through little steps.  However, restlessness can also hinder my progress and growth as it can also make me a little impatient.  I need to better understand that some things take time, and I cannot be good at a skill through only a short practice.  I hope that during my time at Parsons, I can harness this energy positively so that I may grow as a designer and as a person.
