What is Shift?

Assignment: What is the meaning of shift?

Shift is the transition from one thing to another.

I associate the word, ‘shift,’ with change.  Shift is the transition from one thing to another, whether it be environment, interest, emotional state, status, the list goes on.  Shift is something with neither negative nor positive connotations for me, as I have experienced it both ways.  Most recently, I have undergone a positive shift, moving from the suburbs of Maryland to the hectic and wonderful city that is NYC.  Not only was this a shift in geography, but a shift in community and mental state.  Previously, I was surrounded by negativity and doubtfulness.  Though my parents were supportive, my peers and even strangers I had made small talk with, gave serious judgment to my desires of going to art school and pursuing an artistic career.  This was detrimental to my self confidence and I felt constant loneliness and doubt.  Cliched as it may seem, my move to the city was like a breath of fresh air.  My one week of being surrounded by equal creatives has already spurred my excitement and ambition to learn and create.  ‘Shift’ will also permeate through my academic career at Parsons, because I am ready with an open mind to be challenged by different opinions and ideas.  I admire the emphasis The New School puts on integration and cross-curricular studies, because not only am I interested in fashion design, but product design, and environmental studies (which I hope to minor in), and architecture, and marketing/business.  I will hopefully shift through these subjects so that I can not only expand my knowledge and creative mind, but integrate them into my future career.

Reflection:

Through this activity, I learned that a single world can hold a multitude of meanings and significances to me and my personal life in many different ways.  Everything is multifaceted if one takes the time to look into something and reflect/connect it back to themselves compared to others.  I wish to look at future assignments and projects this way to broaden my view and perspective on things throughout the process of creating.
